Start of the journey begins here.
Approaching Dos Cabezas and the water tower. This time we won't be crossing the tracks.
Small trestle in the Mortero Wash area.
Mary dons the new REI hiking boots
Old creosote-soaked railroad timber.
The hike is an easy journey up a large wash.
Why do I always find myself humming "Horse With No Name", out here? :-)

"Wallace's Woolly Daisy" or Eriophyllum wallacei

Close up of a mortero.
Probably the most morteros I have seen in one place. Apparently this area had a large settlement at one time.
I liked the way the Ocotillo and the rock framed this picture.
Cool looking boulder. Almost looks like a tortiose head if you squint your eyes.
Ocotillo and Cholla were abundant in this seldom travelled area of Anza Borrego
Narrow slot between two large boulders
Small bud on this cactus.
Mary among some truck size boulders.
This large cave was smoke blackened from numerous campfires.
Small buds on this ....
Small shelter at Indian Hill
We were not sure if these were man made?
Another view.
The elusive Kaiel, who did not want his picture taken.
This barrel cactus was beginning to bloom.
Impressive Ocotillo near Indian Hill
I KNOW this is the right place?!
These are called "Yonis" and are an Indian fertility symbol carved out of the rock. The Yonis and other rock carvings in the area are thought to be thousands of years old.
View from within one of the caves
We completely missed this on our first pass.
The entrance to the Blue Sun Cave
Experts believe the pictographs here to be hundreds of years old while some of the rock carvings date 4000 BC.
More pictographs.
There were three or four sun representations in the cave.
Exposure to the elements has taken its' toll on the pictographs closer to the entrance.
Mary squeezes in the cave to get a closer look. We were careful not to touch any of the pictographs.
We couldn't decide if this was suppose to be a person or a lizard. When I did some research I learned it was called an antromorph for obvious reasons.
Colorful Sun pictograph
If experts are correct, Columbus would be discovering the "New World" at the time the Kumeyaay artist painted this.
The blue sun pictograph that gives this cave its' name
Black Sun pictograph.
Your guess is as good as mine on this one...maybe they liked Tic tac Toe ? :-)

Blooming Ocotillo flowers against an intense blue desert sky.
As much as I love the capability of our FJ Cruiser the gas mileage leaves much to be desired.
Creosote Bush ?
Bob and Lisa from Bend, Oregon with their Boston Terriers "Rupert" and "Albert". Bob had been checking our site so we agreed to meet them in Anza Borrego. They have been doing a great trip down from Oregon hitting all the great campsites along the way.
Indian Paintbrush on the way out of Bow Willow campground.
Desert Lupine and Desert Dandelions along the S2. The yellow Desert Dandelions are actually a member of the sunflower family.
The Brittlebush displays its' brilliance as we start the drive home.
